Synology’s eight-bay desktop NAS appliances have always been popular with SMBs as they offer a high storage capacity in a desk-friendly format together with plenty of features. The DS1823xs+ is the latest member of Synology’s eight-bay club but, rather than replacing any existing models, it goes to the top of the desktop performance class

The DS1823xs+ will get speeds around the 1,400-1,600MB/s in a perfect setup. However, this leads up back to that slightly dicey subject of media compatibility. Right now, the only M.2 SSDs that you can use in these slots for Storage Pools are the Synology SNV3400/SNV3410 series. These are available in capacities from 240GB to 7TB (factoring in over-provisioning on an 8TB) and although good drives for caching and endurance, are less perfect for those looking to use them for storage pools and traditional performance
